Plot summary
Griff Bonnell rides into Tombstone with his brothers Wes and Chico. He is a reformed gunslinger who now works for the Attorney General's office, and he has come to Cochise County, Arizona, to bring in Howard Swain, wanted for robbing the mail. Swain numbers among the forty hired guns of Jessica Drummond, the landowner who rules the county with an iron fist. Her brother Brockie and his drunken friends are free to terrorize and wreck the town. Jessica rides her white horse in ahead of forty men on black horses. Griff would rather settle matters without unnecessary killing, and she finds herself drawn to the lawman who has come to bring order.

Samuel Fuller repeatedly claimed that the studio overruled the ending he wanted, in which Griff kills Jessica in order to get to her brother Brockie, but the surviving script copies, written by Fuller himself, end the same way as the finished film.- Samuel Fuller showed off the widescreen format in Forty Guns with heavy use of close-ups and one of the longest tracking shots ever done at Fox's studio up to that time, running over five minutes.
- Jidge Carroll sings two songs onscreen in the film, the theme "High Ridin' Woman" and "God Has His Arms Around Me," and both were later recorded by the western singing group The Sons of the Pioneers and released on a single for RCA on November 1, 1957.
