Plot summary
In New York, Janet Haley works at a pleating machine and lives in poverty while she looks for her three-year-old daughter, taken by her husband when the couple separated. A burn brings her to Mountview General Hospital, where intern Jimmie Kildare treats her, and she faints there from exhaustion and malnutrition. At a bar, Janet asks gangster Dan Innes how to find her daughter; he demands $1,000 for the information, which she cannot pay. When gangster boss Hanlon collapses from a knife wound and his men refuse to take him to a hospital, Jimmie operates with Janet's help. Hanlon sends Jimmie $1,000 for saving his life, and Jimmie says he must return it, since interns may not be paid. Janet asks to borrow the money but does not tell him what it is for.
