Plot summary
Shelby Barret earns her living riding show horses for Nicko Nicholas, a snobbish wealthy widow. Johnny Wyatt, the penniless son of a family that once had money on Long Island, plays polo for Nicko. Gene Fairchild, a rich horseman, loves Shelby, and Nicko loves Johnny, but Shelby and Johnny fall in love and marry. Nicko dismisses Shelby, and the newlyweds settle in Wyattville, the town named for Johnny's family, whose members receive his bride with contempt. They begin a business caring for the horses of wealthy neighbors. When a promised loan from Shelby's grandfather in Kentucky falls through, she secretly borrows money from Fairchild. Nicko arrives to spread gossip.
