Plot summary
A wealthy invalid, Leona Stevenson spends a night alone in her New York City townhouse after giving her nurse and the servants time off. Her husband, Henry, has not come home from work, and his office line stays busy, so she telephones his secretary, Miss Jennings, and learns he left with a Mrs. Lord. Flashbacks fill in her past: the only child of J.B. Cotterell, a Chicago pharmaceutical owner, she grew up believing she had a heart ailment, took Henry from her college friend Sally, and married him over her father's objections. Calling Henry's office again, Leona is connected to two men discussing a murder planned for a woman's home at 11:15 that night. The operator and the police dismiss her report, and she keeps telephoning to identify the intended victim.
