Biography

Wendell Corey was an American actor who came to Hollywood from a long apprenticeship in the theater. Born in Dracut, Massachusetts, and educated in Springfield, he took a role as a Swedish janitor in a Springfield Repertory Theater production of Street Scene while working in a department store, then acted full time in Holyoke and spent years in summer stock, producing, directing and acting. Hal Wallis saw him in Dream Girl and brought him to Paramount, where he made his film debut as a gangster in Desert Fury (1947). He played the lead opposite Barbara Stanwyck in The File on Thelma Jordon (1949) and took his most memorable part, Lieutenant Thomas Doyle, in Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window (1954). On television he portrayed Lou Gehrig in Climax! and starred in Harbor Command. He was president of the Motion Picture Academy from 1961 to 1963.

  1. First role

    Corey was cast as a Swedish janitor in Street Scene because the group needed an actor for that part. He remained with the theater group a year, working days in the department store and acting at night.

  2. Big break

    While playing a cynical newspaperman in Elmer Rice's comedy Dream Girl in 1945, Corey was noticed by producer Hal Wallis, who convinced him to sign with Paramount and go to Hollywood for a movie career.

  3. A role that slipped away

    Corey pulled out of A Life of Her Own after only a few days opposite Lana Turner, saying he was miscast, and Ray Milland replaced him.

  4. A change of course

    Corey led the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as President from 1961 to 1963. He also served on the Screen Actors Guild board of directors.
