Plot summary
Ten years after leaving her husband and children in Riverdale, Wisconsin, Naomi Murdoch performs low on the bill of a touring vaudeville company. A letter from her younger daughter, Lily, asks her to come home for Lily's debut in the high school senior play, and another vaudeville performer persuades Naomi to go pretending to be the international stage star she claimed to be. Clem, the town gossip, spreads news of her arrival, starting with Dutch, the hunting and fishing store owner whose affair with Naomi helped drive her away. Lily welcomes her, older daughter Joyce resents her, young Ted does not remember her, and Henry, the school principal, is uneasy: a scandal could cost him a promotion to superintendent. He is also seeing Sara Harper, the drama teacher.
