Plot summary
Three stories of the supernatural are told. In New Orleans on Mardi Gras night, Henrietta, an embittered young woman, keeps a secret love for Michael, a law student. A stranger hands her a mask that makes her beautiful, on the condition that she give it back at midnight, and at a party Michael falls for her without seeing her face. A palmist named Septimus Podgers gives readings for the rich and tells the skeptical lawyer Marshall Tyler to steer clear of one intersection on his route home. The high-wire artist Paul Gaspar cannot shake his dreams of falling, and in every one of them he meets Joan Stanley, a woman he has never encountered.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Flesh and Fantasy (1943)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Warner Bros. contract star John Garfield was loaned to Universal for the lead in a 30-minute segment about an escaped killer, but refused the part, saying he would only consider assignments relevant to the war effort; Warner Bros. suspended him and replaced him with Alan Curtis.
- A segment cut from the film ended with a spectacular storm scene in which the enraged killer races after the girl; preview audiences reacted positively to it, but Universal removed and shelved it and used new scenes featuring humorist Robert Benchley to connect the remaining three segments instead.
- The removed segment was reworked into a separate feature: Universal hired screenwriter Roy Chanslor and director Reginald LeBorg for new scenes, demanded fresh framing to show the refugee innocent of the crimes and give a happy ending, and released the result in 1944 as Destiny.
