Plot summary
Sandra Marshall hears that her husband has died and goes to the remote estate of his prominent family to claim her inheritance. The welcome is cold, above all from her husband's uncle, the research scientist Mark Caldwell, who knew nothing of her or the marriage and calls her a schemer. He lets her stay at the mansion while the lawyers settle the estate, and the two grow less hostile toward each other. Caldwell's teenage niece Julie greets Sandra warmly, but says her uncle keeps her confined on the estate, that odd things happen in a wing she may not enter, and that the older relatives and the servants may be lying about the death. Caldwell says Julie's imagination runs away with her. Sandra cannot decide whom to believe.
