Plot summary

Late one night Thelma Jordon comes to the district attorney's office to report attempted burglaries at the home of her wealthy aunt Vera, with whom she lives. Miles Scott, the chief investigator, is out, so she meets Cleve Marshall, an assistant district attorney who would rather drink than go home to his wife. He asks her to join him for a drink, and an affair begins. Thelma says she is estranged from her husband, Tony. Then Vera is shot dead at home, and Thelma tells Cleve an intruder did it. Cleve hides evidence that could point to her. Thelma is arrested as the prime suspect, and Cleve works to clear her name.
