Plot summary
After 32 people in Boston die when electrical interference reaches their pacemakers, geophysicist Josh Keyes and nuclear specialist Serge Leveque trace the deaths to the planet's failing magnetic field. Reports elsewhere follow: pigeons in London's Trafalgar Square lose their sense of direction, and an astronaut, Major Rebecca Childs, brings a shuttle down in an emergency landing. Josh and Dr. Conrad Zimsky conclude that the planet's inner core has stopped rotating. To restart it, the government plans to detonate nuclear weapons in the outer core, and Dr. Ed Brazzelton builds a vessel, Virgil, to carry them. Commander Robert Iverson and Childs are enlisted to pilot it, hacker Theodore Donald "Rat" Finch is recruited to keep the mission and further disasters off the internet, and Josh is placed in charge of the project.

- After the September 11 attacks led to tighter airport security, the production could no longer film the space shuttle's landing scene at Los Angeles International Airport as planned, so the script was rewritten to have the shuttle Endeavour land in the L.A. River instead.
- Screenwriter John Rogers said he spent three years fighting to strip the script of dinosaurs, magma space-walks, and a windshield for the ship Virgil, insisting he had tried to keep the science accurate despite the finished film's reputation for bad science.
