Plot summary
Gerry is a real estate agent in Dubuque, Iowa, whose gambling has left him in debt to a loan shark named Sam. At a casino he meets Curtis, a younger, itinerant gambler, and the two spend a night drinking. Gerry proposes they travel down the Mississippi River to a high-stakes poker game in New Orleans with a $25,000 buy-in, run by Tony Roundtree, an acquaintance of Curtis. Curtis agrees and stakes Gerry $2,000, and Gerry takes the petty cash from his office before they leave. In St. Louis, Curtis looks up Simone, a prostitute he knows, while Gerry wins at poker on a riverboat casino.
