Biography

Delroy Lindo is an American actor who began on stage in a 1975 production of Of Mice and Men, studied acting at the American Conservatory Theater, and graduated in 1979. A Tony nomination followed for his work in Joe Turner's Come and Gone in 1988. He appeared in Spike Lee's Malcolm X (1992), Crooklyn (1994), and Clockers (1995), playing West Indian Archie, Woody Carmichael, and Rodney Little. His box office hits include Romeo Must Die (2000), Gone in 60 Seconds (2000), The Cider House Rules (1999), Broken Arrow (1996), Ransom (1996), and Get Shorty (1995). He voiced Beta in Up (2009). On television he starred in The Chicago Code, Believe, and The Good Fight. For Da 5 Bloods (2020) he earned best actor awards from the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics, and he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Sinners (2025).

  1. First role

    In 1982, Delroy Lindo made his Broadway debut, taking over for Danny Glover in "Master Harold"...and the Boys, a play whose South African author, Athol Fugard, also directed it.

  2. A role that slipped away

    Lindo declined a part in Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing, but Lee later gave him the role of West Indian Archie, a gangster, in Malcolm X and Woody Carmichael in Crooklyn.

    Lindo started studying acting at the American Conservatory Theater when he was 24 years old, and he graduated from there in 1979.
