Plot summary
Clarence is a Hebrew man in A.D. 33 Jerusalem who cannot pay what he owes the loan shark Jedediah the Terrible, and who loves Jedediah's sister Varinia. He and his friend Elijah lose a chariot race to Mary Magdalene, and Roman soldiers accuse the pair of a theft they did not commit. Smoking opium, Clarence sees a light above his head and decides to pass himself off as a new messiah, riding the fame of Jesus Christ. John the Baptist slaps him; the Twelve Apostles laugh at his bid to join them as a thirteenth. Judas Iscariot tells him to free a band of gladiator slaves to earn the place, which brings him the giant Barabbas. Clarence, Elijah, Barabbas and Zeke then travel the land performing invented miracles.
