David Patrick Kelly
Biography
David Patrick Kelly, an American actor, musician and lyricist, was born in Detroit and is best known for his role as Luther in Walter Hill's cult film The Warriors (1979). He devised much of that character's taunt, and Hill later wrote another part for him in 48 Hrs. (1982). Kelly has appeared in several Spike Lee films, among them Crooklyn (1994) and Chi-Raq (2015), and worked with David Lynch as Dropshadow in Wild at Heart (1990) and on Twin Peaks. He played Sully in Commando (1985). In Flags of Our Fathers (2006) he played Harry S. Truman. He reprised his role as Charlie in John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017). On stage, he originated Da in Once and sang and played mandolin on its Grammy-winning soundtrack, and he won a 1998 Obie Award for sustained excellence. He released an album of original music in 2008.

David Patrick Kelly improvised Luther's famous "Warriors... come out to play-ee-ay!" line in The Warriors after Walter Hill asked him to come up with something, and it was not in the script.

Kelly was the first to play Da in Once on Broadway, which took the 2012 Tony Award for Best Musical. He also sang and played mandolin on the show's Grammy Award-winning soundtrack.

Kelly studied under Marcel Marceau and Mira Rostova while earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts cum laude from the University of Detroit.
Behind the camera
While he was an undergraduate student, Kelly wrote both the lyrics and the music for four musicals that were produced in Detroit.

Kelly released an album of his original music, David Patrick Kelly: Rip Van Boy Man, in May 2008, featuring new songs and live recordings from his 1975 club days.
