Plot summary
Sophia, Heidi DeMuth's mother, has a mental disability and speaks only a handful of words, one of them soof. Heidi is twelve, and the two of them live in Reno, Nevada, with Bernadette, their caretaker, who has not left the house since her father died of a heart attack. A neighbor boy, Zander, is about Heidi's age, and Heidi keeps lists of things she has never seen, adding her family to one of them. A roll of undeveloped film shows Sophia at Hilltop Home in Liberty, New York. The photographs raise questions Bernadette cannot answer, so Heidi packs and boards a bus east, telling strangers that she has family nearby.
