Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Blue Chips had been in development since 1981, bouncing from Time Life Films to MGM and then to 20th Century Fox, where studio head Joe Roth put the script into turnaround. Sherry Lansing got it back at Paramount and had it greenlit, then introduced the project to William Friedkin, who was her husband.
- Tates Locke claimed the movie was actually inspired by his 1982 book Caught in the Net, co-written with Bob Ibach, which detailed Locke's own transgressions as a college basketball head coach, primarily during his time at Clemson.
