Plot summary
Every Fourth of July, Yazoo City, Mississippi holds the Miss Firecracker pageant, and Carnelle Scott intends to enter it. Raised by genteel cousins after her mother's death, she has a reputation around town as Miss Hot Tamale and wants to leave it behind. Her cousin Elain Rutledge won the contest years earlier and is the model Carnelle measures herself against. Elain comes home to give a speech at the pageant, and Carnelle asks to wear the red dress Elain wore when she won. Relatives and friends expect disappointment rather than a triumph. Her cousin Delmount Williams, who shares the house with her, has decided to sell it, which makes the pageant matter more to Carnelle as a way out of town.
