Biography
Winona Ryder is an American actress who first drew notice playing quirky characters in the late 1980s before moving into dramatic roles in the 1990s. Born in Winona County, Minnesota, she made her film debut in Lucas (1986) and broke through with Beetlejuice (1988). She followed with roles in Heathers (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990) and Mermaids (1990), then starred in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992). She won a Golden Globe for The Age of Innocence (1993) and earned consecutive Oscar nominations for that film and for Little Women (1994). Other credits include Reality Bites (1994), The Crucible (1996), Alien Resurrection (1997), Girl, Interrupted (1999) and Mr. Deeds (2002). She stepped away from acting for a period in the early 2000s and later returned in Star Trek (2009) and Black Swan (2010). She also played Joyce Byers on the Netflix series Stranger Things and appeared in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024).

Ryder sent a videotaped audition in which she recited a monologue from J. D. Salinger's novel Franny and Zooey for the film Desert Bloom, but the role went to Annabeth Gish; David Seltzer then cast her in Lucas.

Tim Burton saw Ryder in Lucas and then cast her in Beetlejuice, his 1988 film. Ryder has said her career is owed to Burton.
Behind the camera
Ryder took on both acting and executive producing duties for Girl, Interrupted in 1999. The film was based on Susanna Kaysen's 1993 memoir, and Ryder called the project her "child of the heart."
