Plot summary
Judy Wood leaves New Mexico for Los Angeles with her son Alex so he can live closer to his father, with whom she shares custody. A former defense lawyer, she joins an immigration law office, where she asks to take on the case of Asefa Ashwari, an Afghan woman in detention. Her boss, Ray Hernandez, barely looks at the file and hands her a form asking for two months so Asefa can arrange her return home. At the ICE detention center, Asefa is so heavily medicated that she cannot answer questions. Judy asks the warden to stop the drugs, and Ray shows little sympathy. She learns that Asefa sought asylum after facing persecution in Afghanistan for teaching girls, and secures a work visa for a refugee psychiatrist, who confirms the overmedication and recommends a gradual reduction.
