Plot summary

In the 24th century, Captain Jean-Luc Picard wakes from a dream of being assimilated by the Borg six years before. Starfleet tells him the cyborgs are closing on Earth, but, wary of how he feels about them, sends the Enterprise-E to patrol the Neutral Zone. When the fleet defending Earth starts to lose, Picard disobeys and takes command, directing the surviving ships at a spot on the Borg Cube that looks unimportant. The Cube is destroyed, but a smaller sphere escapes toward Earth, and the Enterprise chases it into a temporal vortex. The crew emerges in 2063, on the eve of Zefram Cochrane's warp flight. The Borg have gone back to stop that flight, which begins humanity's first contact with alien life, so the crew must help Cochrane make it.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Star Trek: First Contact (1996)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Four days were spent filming in the Titan Missile Museum south of Tucson, Arizona, where a disarmed nuclear missile was fitted with a fiberglass capsule shell to stand in for the Phoenix. The cramped silo forced electricians and grips to don rock-climbing harnesses to move down the shaft and attach the lights.
  • The blinking lights in each Borg's eyepiece were not random: Westmore's son programmed them to repeat a production member's name in Morse code.
  • Each Borg had a slightly different design, and Westmore designed a new one each day to make it appear that there was an army of Borg. In reality between eight and twelve actors filled all the roles, because the costumes and makeup were so expensive, and background Borg were simulated by half-finished mannequins.
  • Although the part of Zefram Cochrane was written with James Cromwell in mind, Paramount floated Tom Hanks, a big fan of Star Trek, for the role. Producer Rick Berman said it was never a serious consideration, and Jonathan Frakes commented that casting Hanks would have been a mistake, as he was so well known.
  • Alice Krige suffered a large amount of discomfort filming her role in the film: her tight costume caused blisters, and the painful silver contact lenses she wore could only be kept in for four minutes at a time.
  • The spacesuit helmets were fully enclosed, and when the actors first put them on it was hard to breathe. After a minute of wearing the suit Patrick Stewart became ill, and shooting was discontinued.
  • Whoopi Goldberg was not asked to return as Guinan, the wise bartender whose homeworld was destroyed by the Borg, and she only learned about the decision through the newspapers.
