Plot summary
Meg Murry is having a hard time. Her father, the astrophysicist Dr. Jack Murry, disappeared during an experiment, and her youngest brother, Charles Wallace, a genius who speaks only to his family, is mocked by other people. Meg clashes with her schoolmates, her teachers and her twin brothers. Their neighbor Calvin O'Keefe joins them when a mysterious stranger in odd clothes, Mrs. Whatsit, appears with her companions Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which. The three women carry the children across the universe by tesseract, and along the way they ride a winged creature, hear of the Black Thing, and meet a cheerful fortune-teller called the Happy Medium. The journey is meant to prepare them to free Dr. Murry from a planet ruled by a malevolent force.
