Biography

John Diehl is an American character actor who came to acting after moving to Los Angeles and is known for more than 140 film and television appearances as well as work in avant garde theater. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1950, he took scene-study classes in Hollywood and in 1979 was cast in Sam Shepard's one-act play Action; the following year he became an acting member of the Padua Hills Playwrights Festival. His first significant screen role came in Stripes (1981), followed by National Lampoon's Vacation (1983). He played Detective Larry Zito on Miami Vice, and his later films include The Hanoi Hilton (1987), Walker (1987), Stargate (1994), A Time to Kill (1996), Jurassic Park III (2001) and Wim Wenders's Land of Plenty (2004), whose lead role a New York Times review praised. In 2012 he received the Los Angeles Times Warren Award.
