Plot summary
A Carnotaurus tramples a nest of Iguanodon eggs; one egg survives and is carried by a pterosaur to a tropical island where prehistoric lemurs live. Plio, the daughter of the lemur patriarch Yar, names the hatchling Aladar and raises him beside her own daughter, Suri, over her father's first objections. Years later, while the lemurs gather for a mating ritual, a colossal asteroid strikes the sea and the shockwaves and fire clouds destroy the island. Aladar and the lemurs swim to the mainland. Crossing a burned desert, they are attacked by Velociraptors, and they escape by joining a mixed herd of dinosaur refugees bound for the Nesting Grounds, an oasis the asteroid did not touch. Kron, the herd's callous Iguanodon leader, makes them travel behind everyone else.

- On 26 February 1998, while live-action footage was being shot in Poison Canyon near Trona, California, a crew member was killed and another seriously wounded when a camera boom struck a cross-country power line; the company was later fined $5,000 for violating worker safety laws.
- A delay in December 1986, while the crew waited for Peter Weller's stunt shoes during the shooting of the plates of ED-209 falling down the stairs, prompted Tippett to suggest to Paul Verhoeven that they produce a "dinosaur picture", since they would not be held up by actors in robot outfits.
- Kate Bush wrote and recorded a song for the scene in which Aladar and his family mourn the destruction of their island, but preview audiences did not respond well to it. The producers recommended that she rewrite it, she refused, and the track was not included.
- Producer Kathleen Kennedy approached Tippett with a galley for Michael Crichton's then-upcoming novel Jurassic Park, and Verhoeven then called him, saying: "I know Spielberg has contacted you about Jurassic Park, you should do that instead."
- One character was first intended to be a male Brachiosaurus named Sorbus, voiced by Chris Farley, but after Farley's death the role was rewritten as a female.

An early version was planned as darker and more violent, in the style of a nature documentary, with a Styracosaurus named Woot as hero and a Tyrannosaurus rex named Grozni as villain; after Woot's victory it would have ended with the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction killing the dinosaurs.- To approximate a dinosaur's perspective, visual effects supervisor Neil Krepela invented the "Dino-cam", a computer-controlled camera rigged on a cable between two 72-foot towers that panned and tilted through 360 degrees and moved at up to 30 miles per hour across a span of 1,000 feet.
