Plot summary
Matt Logelin and his wife Liz, sweethearts since childhood, await their first baby. Liz dies of a pulmonary embolism soon after their daughter Maddy is born, and Matt decides to raise the child on his own. Friends and relatives question whether he has the patience and the skills for it; Marion, Liz's mother, is the most doubtful of all. Matt turns down her offer to stay six months and help, and also refuses to move back to his Minnesota hometown. She tells him that Maddy needs family around her and women to look up to. Matt grieves while holding down a full-time job, and he faces gendered expectations and remarks from people who question his place in his daughter's life. Friends and fellow parents help him with Maddy's care.
