Plot summary
Rosa Lynn Sinclair shares her Chicago home with her daughter Loretta and two grandchildren, Thomas and Tracy. Worried about Loretta's drug use and the trouble around Thomas, Rosa Lynn arranges for the three to spend the summer with family in rural Mississippi. Loretta balks: the Delta is dry and country, and her uncle Earl, their host, already runs a business and cares for his wife Annie, who has Alzheimer's disease. Before the trip, Rosa Lynn pawns a silver candelabrum the family calls Nathan, after a slave ancestor, and tosses the pawn ticket into a trash can, hoping Loretta will value the heirloom enough to claim it. Loretta retrieves the ticket. In Mississippi, Earl welcomes the family and puts Loretta to work at Just Chicken, his restaurant, where the schedule is hard for her to keep.
