Plot summary
After leaving the Chicago district attorney's office, Martin Vail built a defense practice on high-profile cases. Archbishop Rushman of Chicago is found dead in his bedroom. Police catch Aaron Stampler, a nineteen-year-old altar boy from Kentucky, as he runs from the scene with blood on him, and charge him with murder. Vail offers to defend him without payment. The stuttering Aaron says he is innocent and that another person was in the room, and he cannot remember the killing because of blackouts. State's attorney John Shaughnessy assigns Janet Venable to prosecute and seeks the death penalty.
