Biography

Sanaa Lathan is an American actress whose career began with television parts in the 1990s before she gained notice in the superhero film Blade (1998). She followed that with roles in The Best Man (1999), The Wood (1999), Love & Basketball (2000), and Brown Sugar (2002), earning an NAACP Image Award for Love & Basketball and a nomination for The Best Man. On Broadway, she played Beneatha Younger in A Raisin in the Sun, which brought a Tony Award nomination, and she later reprised the role in the 2008 film adaptation. Her other films include Alien vs. Predator (2004), Something New (2006), The Family That Preys (2008), Wonderful World (2009), Repentance (2013), The Best Man Holiday (2013), The Perfect Guy (2015), Now You See Me 2 (2016), and Nappily Ever After (2018). She also voiced Donna Tubbs on The Cleveland Show and Family Guy, earned an Emmy nomination for Succession, and directed On the Come Up (2022).

    Lathan studied with Earle R. Gister while training at Yale, where she also appeared in several Shakespeare plays. She went on to earn acclaim on the Los Angeles stage and off-Broadway.
