Plot summary
A sentence of just under twelve years is behind Emily when she arrives to build a new life on her own terms, taking no trouble from people she dislikes and using others to reach her own goals. She works at a discount store whose owner, Mr. Nudd, is the son of a woman she knew inside, and rents a room from Pike, a police officer she goes to for practical and emotional help. Most of her time goes to the Currys: she telephones Neil and Barbara and hangs up, watches them, and lets the harassment grow bolder and more open, adding strain to a marriage that is already troubled. She gives no reason for choosing them.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The soundtrack used songs written for the film plus records by Alberta Hunter, an 82-year-old veteran of 1920s-30s nightclubs and Broadway who had spent 20 years away from show business working as a nurse.
- Alan Rudolph wrote the script in two weeks after driving past a Metro theater showing Rita Hayworth and Ida Lupino movies, conceiving it as a loose metaphor for the women's movement disguised as a B-melodrama.
- After producer John Hammond recorded an album of Alberta Hunter's songs, Rudolph matched each new one to a scene until the songs became Emily's emotional diary, eliminating the need for some dialogue.
- Anthony Perkins was cast as Neil Curry on the suggestion of Rudolph's wife, who had seen him perform on stage in Equus.
- Rudolph wrote the lead character of Emily specifically for Geraldine Chaplin, who had appeared in his earlier film Welcome to L.A.
