Plot summary
Simba is born to King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi, and Rafiki the mandrill presents the cub to the gathered animals of the Pride Lands. Scar, Mufasa's younger brother, wants the throne for himself. Mufasa shows Simba the kingdom and describes the circle of life that ties every living creature together, and forbids him from traveling beyond its borders. Scar talks the cub into visiting an elephant graveyard outside those borders, where Shenzi's clan of spotted hyenas chases Simba and his friend Nala. Zazu alerts Mufasa, who rescues them and forgives Simba, telling him that past kings watch over the living from the stars. Scar then seeks out the hyenas, who agree to serve his ambitions.

- Elton John, who worked on the remake's soundtrack, disowned the film saying it was "a huge disappointment" to him because "they messed the music up", and that the magic and joy were lost.
- The only shot in the entire film that was not animated is the sunrise in the opening scene; every other image is computer-generated.
- Seth Rogen voicing Pumbaa marked the first time the character was not played by Ernie Sabella, who had voiced him in every Disney project up to that point.
- The film's production budget was $250-260 million, making it one of the most expensive films ever made and one of the most expensive Disney remakes.
- Beyoncé Knowles-Carter was Jon Favreau's top choice to voice Nala, and the director and the studio were said to be willing to do whatever it took to accommodate her busy schedule.
