Biography

Sean Astin is a trade union leader and American actor who started as a child actor and later became known for the Lord of the Rings films, in which he played Samwise Gamgee, and for the title role in Rudy (1993). Born in Santa Monica, he made his film debut in The Goonies (1985) and then appeared in Toy Soldiers (1991), Encino Man (1992), Courage Under Fire (1996), Bulworth (1998), 50 First Dates (2004) and Click (2006). He directed the short Kangaroo Court, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film in 1994, and his prizes include two Young Artist Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award. On television he portrayed Lynn McGill on 24, Bob Newby on Stranger Things, and voiced Oso in Special Agent Oso and Raphael in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. On stage, he played Santa Claus in Elf the Musical, a Broadway revival, and he was elected president of SAG-AFTRA in 2025.
