Plot summary
Kent Stock joins the Norway High School Tigers in 1990 as an assistant, hoping to learn from Jim Van Scoyoc, the coach who has built a baseball tradition in the small Iowa town. The Tigers win another state title that season. Principal Halberstorm, who wants Norway to consolidate with the larger Madison School District, picks Stock to replace Van Scoyoc, expecting the team to lose. Stock's only coaching experience, as far as the principal knows, is with a girls' volleyball team. Several returning stars refuse to come out for the new coach, and the townspeople doubt him. A state auditor whose findings backed the merger and a baseball writer from Des Moines follow the team as Stock tries to win over his players and himself in what will be Norway's last season.
