Plot summary
Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, Alabama, opens its doors to black students in 1973, and Tony Nathan, a gifted athlete, becomes one of several black players on the school's football team, which is predominantly white. Coach Tandy Gerelds urges his squad to channel the anger stirred by repeated violent incidents into unity, yet the black and white players still clash, on the field and off it. When a riot breaks out on campus, Gerelds agrees to let Hank Erwin, a chaplain who travels with sports teams, address the group. Erwin's speech moves almost every player there to commit his life to Jesus Christ, and the team prays together. Gerelds stays out of that moment and does not know what to make of it.
