Plot summary
Jack Farmer, 22, enlists in the Army Reserves in 2003 and ships to Iraq. He reaches Abu Ghraib, a prison twenty miles from Baghdad, with dozens of other young soldiers. Captain Hayes welcomes the men with a speech about the front lines of the war on terrorism. Jack asks for MP duty and is moved to the Hard Site, a cell block said to hold hardcore terrorists, with no training or briefing. Sergeant Tanner tells him the block runs on no compassion. Jack is uneasy about how detainees are treated and befriends Ghazi Hammoud, a London-educated engineer.
