Plot summary
Oliver Rose and Barbara Rose meet at an auction on Nantucket, bidding against each other for an antique Chinese statuette. They marry, and over eighteen years Oliver becomes a wealthy corporate lawyer in Washington, D.C., while Barbara raises their twins, Josh and Carolyn, and fills a large house with furniture and objects. With the children grown and about to leave for college, Barbara starts a catering company and decides she wants a divorce, asking for nothing but the house and everything inside it. Oliver, whose earnings paid for the house, refuses to give it up and stays on through a legal loophole. Both set out to force the other to move out, with Gavin D'Amato, Oliver's lawyer, caught in the middle.
