Plot summary

Frank Keane is a baker, and grief over his wife's death has left him nearly catatonic. Driving his bread truck on a rural highway, he stops at a car wreck to help the stranger inside, Steve Mills, who is hurt too badly to continue. Steve was bound for Pasadena to meet a woman he knew years ago, and he asks Frank to go in his stead. The appointment is a dance class at Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing & Charm School, and Frank goes to find Steve's friend among the dancers. The story shifts among Steve's boyhood at the school, the roadside wreck and Frank's first Lindy hop.

On the first day of production of Midnight Rider in 2014, camera assistant Sarah Jones was killed by a train during a scene filmed near a railway line; police concluded that CSX Transportation had denied Miller permission to film on the rail line and that he was criminally trespassing.
On March 9, 2015, Miller agreed to a plea deal in exchange for having charges dropped against his wife; he was sentenced to 10 years, the first two to be served in jail, followed by probation, plus a $20,000 fine and 360 hours of community service.
Miller's conviction marked the first time a director was sent to prison for the death of a cast or crew member.
In July 2017, Sarah Jones's family was awarded $11.2 million in civil damages; a jury found CSX, the train's operator, primarily liable for 35% of the judgment and Miller responsible for 28%.
After the deaths of Miller's father and his wife Jody Savin's mother, the couple took money out of their Pasadena home to finance Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing and Charm School as a feature, their first foray into independent film.
