Plot summary
In Astoria, Oregon, an expanding country club is buying up the Goon Docks, and the families who live there are unable to pay what they owe on their homes. Mikey Walsh and his friends, who call themselves the Goonies, gather for one last weekend together. In the attic of the Walsh house, Mikey finds a 1632 doubloon and an old map said to show the way to the fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a pirate of the 17th century. The boys see the treasure as a way to keep their neighborhood and head for a derelict restaurant on the coast where the trail starts. Mikey's older brother Brand follows, along with Andy and Stef. That restaurant is where the Fratelli crime family is hiding, and they are after the same prize.

- During the summer of the 30th anniversary, the Walsh family home in Astoria drew 1,200 to 1,500 visitors daily. In August 2015, the owners, neighbors and the city moved to limit public access.
- The 2024 Star Wars series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew was inspired by The Goonies, with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy saying director Jon Watts wanted to do a sort of Goonies in Star Wars.
- A December 2020 virtual cast reunion live reading of the full script, with Josh Gad as Sloth, Jean Smart as Mama Fratelli and Kristen Bell as Irene Walsh, raised over $130,000 for the charity No Kid Hungry.
