Plot summary

The Fellowship has scattered. Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee are lost in the Emyn Muil, where the creature Gollum is tracking them; once captured, he is allowed to guide them toward Mordor. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli hunt the Uruk-hai who carried off Merry and Pippin, who escape into Fangorn Forest and meet the Ent Treebeard. In Rohan they meet Éomer, exiled by King Théoden. At Edoras, Théoden is held under Saruman's control, with Gríma Wormtongue at his side, while Saruman's armies gather against the kingdom. Éowyn, Théoden's niece, is drawn to Aragorn. The king's people are sent to Helm's Deep.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • While filming in Rohan, Viggo Mortensen broke two toes kicking an Orc helmet in a take used in the film, Orlando Bloom cracked three ribs falling off his horse, and stunt double Brett Beattie dislocated a knee; Peter Jackson joked that they were 'The Walking Wounded'.
  • The CGI Treebeard took 28 to 48 hours per frame to render, and for scenes with Merry and Pippin a 14-foot-tall wheeled puppet was built with polyurethane bark moulds; inside its hands, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd sat on concealed bicycle seats and were left alone during breaks.
  • Gollum's CGI model was redesigned in 2001 when Andy Serkis was cast as Sméagol, and over Christmas 2001 the crew reanimated all the previous shots within two months; the original model can still be glimpsed in the first film.
  • The Battle of Helm's Deep took about three months to film, and its 500 extras insulted each other in Māori and improvised moments such as the Uruk-hai stamping their spears before the battle began.
  • Alan Lee's 1:35-scale miniature of Helm's Deep was among the first built for the film and featured in the 45-minute video that sold the project to New Line Cinema; Peter Jackson used it to plan the battle with 40,000 toy soldiers.
  • The thatched exterior of Rohan's capital Edoras took six months to build on Mount Sunday, and the interiors of its buildings served double duty as crew offices and lunch halls.
  • The funeral song Éowyn sings at her cousin Théodred's entombment in the extended edition has Rohirric (Old English) lyrics written by Philippa Boyens rather than Tolkien, translated by David Salo, to a tune from Iceland's rímur folk tradition.
  • Arwen was originally to visit Galadriel and join an army of Elves fighting at Helm's Deep alongside Aragorn, but the script changed during shooting, partly because of poor fan reaction, and a new scene of her leaving for the West was written.
