Plot summary
At Sea Life Park on Oahu, Henry Roth works as a marine veterinarian and keeps his romances short, dating tourists who will soon fly home. A broken boat leaves him waiting at the Hukilau Café, where he watches Lucy Whitmore build structures out of her waffles, takes her for a local and skips his usual approach. The two talk over breakfast, and she suggests they eat together again the next morning. When he returns, Lucy greets him as a stranger. Sue, who runs the café, explains the car crash a year earlier that left Lucy unable to keep new memories: she wakes each day back on Sunday, October 13, and her widowed father and her brother restage his birthday to keep it from her. Sue warns Henry off, but he keeps finding ways to meet Lucy.

- Drew Barrymore got the film made as a reunion: sold on the script, she wrote Adam Sandler a letter suggesting it as their next film together after The Wedding Singer, and Sandler joined in December 2002.
- Adam Sandler rewrote the script heavily, turning it from a drama into a comedy and moving the story from Seattle to Hawaii. Peter Segal pushed him to rewrite the cafe interiors as well, finding them claustrophobic and too much like My Dinner with Andre.
- Not all of the Hawaii in the film is Hawaii. Because shooting outside the studio zone cost too much, interiors such as the Whitmore house were built in Los Angeles and dressed to look tropical, while the walrus habitat and the shark tunnel were filmed at Six Flags Marine World in Vallejo, California.
- The film's video-diary idea moved into real care: in 2015 the Hebrew Home of Riverdale in the Bronx began showing residents with early dementia a video every morning with reminders and messages from family, a programme its director of social services said was inspired by the film.
- Researchers in 2010 described a woman whose memory loss after a car crash closely matched the film's invented condition. Tests showed she did retain some learning overnight, and since she named Drew Barrymore as her favorite actress they concluded her idea of amnesia may have been shaped by knowledge of the plot.
