Plot summary
Kevin Garner manages a hedge fund until a collapse costs him his job. Tempted to drink, he visits a bar, where Molly approaches him on a dare; they marry. The couple later becomes estranged after their son disappears. Driving home distraught, Kevin crashes his car. A stranger called the Benefactor pulls him from the wreck, says he has crossed into another reality, and takes him to a café where staff and patrons react with visible fear. The Benefactor says countless universes exist, each born of a choice. When Kevin prays, the Benefactor vanishes, stranding him in a parallel, totalitarian Earth.
