Plot summary
Mag Singer has raised seven sons and is about to leave her husband Patrick for a life of her own in the city. Only Simon, the youngest, is still at home. Then word arrives of a bombing at the base in the Middle East where her son Percival is stationed. The other sons come back to the family house to wait for news. Alfred, the eldest, is engaged to Cynthia. Gideon holds himself answerable for Percival's choice to enlist. Darren and Merle are identical twins. Izzy, the second-youngest, went into science as his father did. While they wait, old grievances come up among them.
