Plot summary

Antisemitism is still widespread across Europe after the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945, and poverty is common among the Jewish refugees. Conditions are squalid in the camps for displaced persons where Jewish survivors wait, and people still die after liberation in the concentration camps, of disease or of eating too much. Survivors who go back to their home towns meet pogroms. Emigration to the British Mandate of Palestine becomes a goal for many, but British rules sharply restrict how many Jews may enter. Some attempt the crossing illegally, and those who are intercepted end up held in locked camps on Cyprus.
