Biography

John Rhys-Davies is a Welsh actor who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art after being born in Salisbury in 1944 and raised partly in Tanganyika. He appeared on British television in the early 1970s and later took roles as Macro in I, Claudius and Vasco Rodrigues in Shōgun (1980). He played Sallah in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and returned to the role in later Indiana Jones films. He is known for playing Gimli in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, including The Two Towers (2002), and for voicing Treebeard. His other films include Sahara (1983), The Living Daylights (1987), Glory Daze (1995), The Medallion (2003), and One Night with the King (2006). On television he had roles in The Untouchables (1993) and Sliders (1995 to 1997). He earned three nominations from the Screen Actors Guild, winning one, and a Primetime Emmy nomination. He has also worked extensively as a voice actor in animation and video games.
