Plot summary
In 1775, Will Reynolds and his partner Joshua Brand work as mercenaries for the British East India Company, swapping a parliamentary report on the company's misconduct for an altered version, and Will secretly keeps the original. His mentor Charles Kemp, who built his own fortune the same way and promised Will the same life in return for his service, learns that Will intends to retire and orders his men to kill him. Warned by a vicar, Will fights off the attackers and escapes, trading clothes with the dead vicar to pass as a dead man. The Holloway family takes him in at a small English town, and he poses as its new vicar while growing close to their daughter Charlotte.
