David Warner
Biography
David Warner was an English actor who worked on stage and screen for six decades, often cast as villains but also in sympathetic parts. Born in Manchester in 1941, he trained at RADA and then joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he took the role of Henry VI in its Wars of the Roses history cycle and later played Hamlet. He made his film debut in Tom Jones (1963) and gained prominence as the lead in Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment (1966), which brought him a BAFTA nomination. His films included The Omen (1976), Time After Time (1979), Time Bandits (1981), Tron (1982), A Christmas Carol (1984), Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989), Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991), Titanic (1997), and Mary Poppins Returns (2018). On television, he won an Emmy for Masada and was nominated for Holocaust. He did voice work for animation and video games. He died in 2022.

Warner's first professional stage role came in January 1962 at the Royal Court Theatre, where he played Snout, a minor part in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, directed by Tony Richardson.
Big break
The leading role in Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment (1966), opposite Vanessa Redgrave, was a major step that established Warner's reputation for slightly off-the-wall characters.
First role
In 2001, Warner came back to the stage after a hiatus of nearly three decades, playing Andrew Undershaft in a Broadway revival of George Bernard Shaw's Major Barbara.
Getting ready for a role
Warner based his portrayal of a Cardassian interrogator in a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode on the evil re-educator from 1984.
Beyond film
Warner contributed "Sonnet 25" to When Love Speaks, a 2002 compilation album. It features Shakespearean sonnets and play excerpts performed by well-known actors and musicians.
