Plot summary
Long ago, the thoriphants who stayed behind were enslaved by humanity and put to work. Their descendants believe the Uprights will one day return to free them. Sold at auction as a youngster, Mosley plows the fields of the farmer Simon. Twenty five years on he shares the farm with his mate Bera and their son Rue, and they also know Turpin, who hauls for Bemus, a salesman who travels with Shank and Ollie. Fireflies guide Rue to a cave whose walls are covered with old drawings of thoriphants standing upright, but Mosley calls them fairy tales. He and Bera then learn that Simon has agreed to sell Rue to Bemus once their second child is born, and Bera urges Mosley to flee and search the caves for clues to the Uprights.
