Plot summary

At the Winthrop house, police officers and medical technicians work the scene. Howard Damon, whose chest carries three deep gashes, is wheeled into an ambulance, and Tanya Heller is placed in a police car. Randolph Carter is carrying The Necronomicon, the book of spells that belonged to Joshua Winthrop, and he gives it to Howard for safekeeping. When Randolph brings up the house with the university's Chancellor, he is told to leave alone things he could never understand. Professor Warren agrees to help him instead. Howard comes along as the three set out for the spot where Randolph once burst up through the ground, and Howard is left near the car to keep guard.
