Biography

Karen Allen is an American actress whose career spans film, television and theater. Born in Carrollton, Illinois, she made her screen debut in Animal House (1978) and soon appeared in Manhattan (1979), The Wanderers (1979) and Cruising (1980). Her breakthrough came as Marion Ravenwood in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), earning her the Saturn Award for Best Actress. She later starred in Shoot the Moon (1982), Starman (1984), earning a second Saturn nomination, and Scrooged (1988). Her stage work includes Broadway (The Monday After The Miracle, 1982) and an off-Broadway lead in Extremities (1983). She also directed for stage and film, receiving the Best International Short prize at the 2017 Manchester Film Festival for A Tree. A Rock. A Cloud. She returned as Marion Ravenwood in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023), and appeared in The Perfect Storm (2000) and In the Bedroom (2001).

    Allen studied and performed with the Washington Theatre Laboratory in Washington, D.C. She joined Shakespeare & Company in Massachusetts in 1974, then returned to New York City three years later to study at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute.

    Allen's first time directing a movie came in 2016, with the short film A Tree. A Rock. A Cloud., drawn from a Carson McCullers short story. In March 2017 it took Best International Short at the Manchester Film Festival.

  3. Big break

    For playing Marion Ravenwood, Indiana Jones's love interest, in Steven Spielberg's blockbuster Raiders of the Lost Ark, Karen Allen took home the Saturn Award for Best Actress.
