Plot summary
Mia Thermopolis turns twenty-one and comes home to Genovia, where her grandmother Clarisse Renaldi reigns. Viscount Mabrey cites the law that keeps an unmarried woman off the throne. He wants the crown for his nephew Nicholas Devereaux, another claimant, and Parliament backs him. Clarisse asks for time, so Mia has thirty days to find a husband, and to satisfy the law she agrees to marry Andrew Jacoby, Duke of Kenilworth. Her lessons continue: riding side-saddle and archery. She meets Nicholas before she learns who he is, and once she does, she distrusts him. Clarisse invites Nicholas to stay at the palace so she can keep an eye on him, and Mabrey has him court Mia.

- Director Garry Marshall ordered Rhimes to write the slumber-party mattress-surfing scene, which she felt had little to do with her story. She said he taught her that straying from the plot can create the moments people remember.
- The PowerPoint presentation Mia, Clarisse and Lilly use to size up eligible bachelors came from Rhimes's own household rule: her young daughter had to build a PowerPoint presentation whenever she wanted something.
