Biography

Harrison Ford is an American actor who, after minor television and film roles in the late 1960s and early 1970s, became a leading man through two blockbuster franchises. Born in Chicago, he first drew notice in American Graffiti (1973) and The Conversation (1974), then broke through as Han Solo in Star Wars (1977) and as Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). He also played Rick Deckard in Blade Runner (1982) and Jack Ryan in Patriot Games (1992), returning to that role in Clear and Present Danger (1994). His dramatic turn in Witness (1985) brought his sole Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Other credits include The Fugitive (1993), Air Force One (1997), and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. On television, he starred in 1923 and Shrinking, earning Emmy nominations for the latter. He has received the AFI Life Achievement Award and an Honorary Palme d'Or, among other honors.

A role that slipped away
Jacques Demy picked Ford to star in Model Shop, his first American movie, but Columbia Pictures' head believed Ford had "no future" in film and urged Demy to cast someone with more experience. Gary Lockwood ended up with the role.
Big break
After American Graffiti, Lucas brought Ford in to read lines for actors trying out for parts in Star Wars (1977), his coming space-opera epic. Ford's readings won Lucas over, and he was cast as Han Solo.
A role that slipped away
According to Howard Kazanjian in his book A Producer's Life, Spielberg and Lucas were hesitant to cast Ford at first. Lucas had worked with him on American Graffiti and Star Wars, and relented once Tom Selleck could not accept.
A role that slipped away
In 2004, Ford passed on starring in the thriller Syriana, later saying he had not felt strongly enough about the material's truth and thought he had made a mistake. George Clooney took the role and won an Oscar and a Golden Globe.
Getting ready for a role
Brian Helgeland was hesitant to cast Ford, wanting a character actor for Rickey, but Ford's persistence and dedication won him over. Ford studied Rickey's life, wore a fat suit and prosthetics, and worked with a voice coach on Rickey's speech.
First role
Ford's first known role was uncredited, a bellhop in Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round. Having offended producer Jerry Tokofsky, he ended up at the bottom of the hiring list.
