Plot summary
Victoria Grant, a British coloratura soprano in 1934 Paris, cannot find singing work and has nothing for food or lodging. Toddy Todd, a cabaret performer, is thrown out of his job at Chez Lui. He suggests that Victoria, presented as a man, work as a female impersonator with him as her manager. The invented identity is Count Victor Grazinski, a Polish gay man and former lover of Toddy, cast off by his family. The agent Andre Cassell takes the Count on and books a nightclub debut. Watching that opening night are the Chicago club owner King Marchand, his girlfriend Norma Cassady and his bodyguard Squash Bernstein. King is drawn to the singer he sees on the stage.

- The film had been planned as early as 1978 with Julie Andrews starring alongside Peter Sellers, but Sellers died in 1980 while Andrews and Edwards were filming S.O.B., so Robert Preston was cast in the role of Toddy.

The costume Andrews wears in the number "The Shady Dame from Seville" is the same one Preston wears at the end of the film: it was made to fit Preston, then drawn in tight with a series of hooks and eyes at the back to fit Andrews.- Blake Edwards, Andrews's husband, adapted the screenplay from the 1933 German film Victor and Victoria, written and directed by Reinhold Schünzel; Edwards said it took only one month to write, and Andrews watched the 1933 version to prepare for her role.
